Monošter (Szentgotthárd in Hungarian, St. Gotthard in German) is a town on the Raba River in the westernmost part of Hungary. It lies in the Železna Županija district (Vas megye in Hungarian, Eisenburg in German) and is considered to be the centre of the Slovenian Porabje region.
Visit the Őrség Nature Park, with its amazing forests and magnificent landscape, and end your outing by going shopping in the town of Lenti. Not far from Lenti is Velemér, where you can visit a church featuring frescoes by Johannes Aquila. In the nearby village of Magyarszombatfa, you will find that pottery craft is still alive and well.
In the village of Márokföld, you can visit an adventure park and an energy park.
The Slovenian Porabje region is in the far western part of Hungary (in the Železna Županija/Vas megye district), which is home to a Slovenian minority (Porabski Slovenci, or Porabje Slovenians). The town of Monošter is considered the historical centre of Porabje and is also the centre for the Porabje Slovenians.
You can get to know the customs and traditions of Slovenians in Hungary by visiting the exhibition in the Ágoston Pável museum. There you can also visit the third largest baroque church in Hungary.
In Števanovci, don’t miss the Iron Curtain museum, which shows how the border between Yugoslavia and Hungary was protected.
In the village of Andovci, you can see Mali Triglav (Little Triglav) – a rock that was donated to Andovci by the Triglav National Park.
