PIŠKOTKI & ZASEBNOST
The Rotunda is believed to have been built in the first half of the 13th century (1205–1235). Legend has it that the church originally belonged to the Templars. In addition to the exceptional Romanesque architectural legacy, two layers of frescoes have been preserved in the Rotunda, which gives it significance even beyond this region.
Due to the characteristics of the construction, the circular sanctuary is part of what remains of a supposed larger medieval building complex. What is left of the first wall painting is a composition depicting the march and homage of the three kings. It is estimated that it was created in the first part of the 14th century. The artistic character is also conveyed by the fresco technique used in the depiction of the Passion of Christ, created around the year 1400.
The entrance to the Rotunda is symbolically marked by Christ’s arrival in Jerusalem – the reason for this will be revealed when you visit.
