Nature in all its glory

Nature in all its glory

The wealth of pristine nature in harmony with thermal mineral water creates a special environment that's home to selected animal and plant species.

The plains in the north of the municipality of Moravske Toplice is surrounded by the Goričko hills, an area protected by Natura 2000 and the Goričko Nature Park. This landscape beckons you with its unspoilt Motvarjevci Forest, wet meadows, the habitat of the poet’s daffodils, etc. It is also home to rare and endangered animal species.

The Natura 2000 area represents as much as 66.15% of the municipality’s territory.

The green destination of Moravske Toplice stretches across endless plains, dressed in the colours of the season. In the north, the destination rises into hills with the preserved green forests of the Goričko region, its meadows, streams and wetlands, where you can breathe some fresh air, get some rest and find peace. Be a part of this pristine environment and join us in carefully protecting it.

The diversity of natural wealth is also represented by endangered species.

Mammals

Lesser horseshoe bats – you can encounter them in Kančevci. Greater mouse-eared bats are rarer, and they have found their home in Vučja Gomila. Both bat species are protected Natura 2000 species.

Birds

The white stork lives in Prosenjakovci. This stunning species, typical for the Prekmurje region, is protected under Natura 2000.

Insects

The large copper can be found in Motvarjevci. This butterfly lives in wet and marshy meadows, and it has an endearing colourful appearance. It is also an endangered species protected under Natura 2000.

Natural assets

The Curek Stream – a typical water habitat – is located in Lončarovci; it is a stream with a preserved meandering bed and riparian vegetation, which is extremely rich in life. Many species of dragonflies can be found here, including the large golden-ringed dragonfly (the largest dragonfly and a rare, endangered species). The stream is also home to European crayfish (indicators of good stream quality), water striders and other species. The stream has the status of a natural asset.

Wet meadows in Motvarjevci

A habitat with a variety of colourful wet meadows can be found here. These are (or were) typical in the settlements of Motvarjevci, Berkovci, Prosenjakovci, Lončarovci, etc. In the wet meadows in Motvarjevci you can find lemon lilies, Siberian irises, sneezeworts, great burnets, and other interesting plant species. These species invite a great diversity of insects (butterflies), and interesting species of birds (e.g. the red-backed shrike) also appear here.

‘Košeri’ beech tree
