PIŠKOTKI & ZASEBNOST
The Great Saint Martin European Cultural Route (Latin: Via Sancti Martini) connects those places associated with the life and work of the most famous saint in Europe, St. Martin.
The Saint Martin European Route runs from Tours in France to Szombathely in Hungary, covering a total distance of 2,500 km. Saint Martin was born in Szombathely, in the former Roman settlement of Savaria, and he died in Tours.
The route that leads from Szombathely (Hungary) to Tours (France) was declared a European Cultural Route by the Council of Europe in 2005.
In Slovenia, a large part of the 500-kilometre Saint Martin Route goes through places that are associated, by name or otherwise, with St. Martin. There are more than eighty churches and chapels dedicated to St. Martin in Slovenia.
The route is aimed at attracting pilgrims, hikers, sporty types, and all those who enjoy natural and cultural heritage.
The symbol of the Saint Martin Route is ‘Saint Martin’s Footprint,’ which is represented with a sword and a divided cape.
The Saint Martin European Route enters Slovenia from Hungary and goes up the hill to the church of St. Martin in Domanjševci, then returns to the route leading to Središče, and continues through Prosenjakovci and Motvarjevci to Kobilje, where the route leads from the Church of St. Martin towards Martinov Breg, past the chapel down into the Bukovnica forest, and then along the forest to the famous energy zone at Lake Bukovnica. Here it merges with the Pomurje Hiking Trail and follows it across the Strehovci Gorice hills and the Filovci Gorice hills to Bogojina, and descends through Vučje Gomile and Jelovškov Breg into the valley in the direction of Moravske Toplice, and then further to Martjanci with its parish church of St. Martin. The route continues towards Murska Sobota and on to Petanjci, where it leaves Prekmurje.
